Anyone who uses their drone regularly will sooner or later realise that the drone doesn’t stay clean on its own all the time. In this guide, we want to show you how you can clean your drones quickly, easily and thoroughly.
If you fly your drone regularly, sooner or later you will notice that the drone is becoming dirty. This can be as simple as a little dust, grass discolouration on the housing, but also more critical dirt such as sand/dirt that accumulates in the motors.
While the first only disturbs the appearance, the second can lead to defects in the drone. For this reason, you should always clean your drone. On the one hand, this increases the service life of your drone, and on the other hand, a freshly cleaned drone simply looks more professional when you take it with you on a job.
In the following sections, we describe the best ways to clean the individual parts of your drone.
Cleaning the drone camera
A dirty lens can affect the quality of your photos to a greater or lesser extent. You should therefore regularly check that the lens is clean to ensure you get the best possible quality from your photos. A fingerprint or other dirt on the lens can be very annoying when you look at the pictures afterwards.
You have several options for cleaning the lens and quite a few people make a real science out of it. We recommend a special cleaning pen for lenses, which costs less than €7. The following procedure is then recommended.
- Use the side with the brush to gently remove coarse dirt from the lens. This will prevent you from scratching the lens in the next step if coarse grains etc. are still on the lens.
- With the other side, which consists of a velvet surface, you can now wipe over the lens without applying much pressure. Please note: do not make circular movements, but wipe radially, i.e. several times from the centre directly outwards.
In this way, you should usually be able to remove almost any dirt that accumulates on the lens over time. We can also recommend the following product.
- Lieferumfang: 1 Hama Reinigungsstift, Lenspen, Stiftlänge: 12,5 cm, Durchmesser Reinigungsspitze: 13 mm, Material: Kunststoff, Farbe: Schwarz
Alternatively, we can also give you the following options for cleaning the lens.
- Microfibre cloth and lens cleaning spray
- handy bellows (as an alternative to a brush)
When buying a suitable blower, make sure that it is equipped with a dust filter. The dust filter prevents you from sucking in impurities when sucking in air, which you then press onto the front of your drone or the lens.
Cleaning the drone housing
Depending on the drone, the drone housing can also get dirty more or less quickly. Especially when taking off and charging on unclean ground or when flying in areas where a lot of dust or dirt is swirled around (for example in the forest), a lot can get stuck on the housing. Another common problem: insects.
Depending on the drone, dirt on the housing can interfere with sensors or block ventilation openings. As a rule, a little compressed air spray (alternatively a small bellows as used for cleaning the camera), some glass cleaner, cotton buds and a (microfibre) cloth will help here. If possible, avoid overly aggressive chemical cleaning agents so as not to damage the housing itself or any sensors. When flying the drone, make sure to use the cleanest possible surfaces for take-off and landing.

As can be clearly seen in the following image, the DJI Mavic Pro has several sensors and the ventilation on its underside. Soiling at this point can therefore impair the flight characteristics of the drone. This can be similar with other drone models. Familiarise yourself with your technology.
Cleaning the motors
You should pay particular attention to the motors of your drone. Contamination such as sand, small stones or other dirt can damage the motors during operation. Here we recommend a can of compressed air spray.
- Dismantle the rotors of your drone.
- Direct the compressed air spray to an opening on the motor.
- Blow enough air into the opening and move the compressed air spray back and forth a little to reach and blow out any dirt.
Only in very rare cases should it be necessary to dismantle the engine to remove dirt. You should only do this if you can say with certainty that dirt has accumulated in the motor and is affecting the flight characteristics of the drone.
Further tips for cleaning a drone
Here are a few more tips that you should bear in mind when cleaning your drone:
- Always be careful when cleaning sensitive parts, such as the lens. It’s better to apply less pressure than too much.
- When cleaning the lens, you should attach the gimbal mount. This stabilises the camera and makes cleaning easier.
- When it comes to cleaning accessories, you should not always choose the cheapest product. Follow our recommendations above or study the product reviews carefully beforehand.
