How to stay motivated as a drone pilot

You probably know what it’s like: in the beginning, the excitement is great, the unpacking of the drone, the first exciting flights, the first impressive shots. But over time, motivation wanes and at some point the drone ends up in the cupboard. That’s a shame, because the potential that lies within you as a drone pilot remains untapped. So how do you manage to stay motivated and get the most out of your hobby or even your job as a drone pilot? We have put together some tips that we have gathered from our many years of working with drone pilots.

Set yourself realistic goals

Instead of dreaming of lucrative contracts and wild flights through the most amazing areas, you should start small. Firstly, learn to control your drone safely. That’s the be-all and end-all. It may sound a bit boring, but only when you know how to really fly your drone – and we’re not talking about manoeuvres you can perform at the touch of a button – will you realise how much fun it really is. You then concentrate on certain manoeuvres to gradually master them perfectly. Small successes motivate you to keep going.

💡 Tip: Keep a flight log and record your drone flights. Make a note of important details such as location, time, flight duration, number of take-offs, purpose of the flight, special incidents, etc. This will help you to keep track of your flights and get a feel for how active you are. writing things down will help you to consciously engage with your drone flying.

Make drone flying a habit

(Good) habits are an ideal way to improve in an area. If you manage to make flying your drone regularly a habit, you will get better almost by yourself. Try to integrate drone flying into your everyday life in such a way that you enjoy collecting a few flying hours on a regular basis.

💡 Tip: If you generally find it difficult to build up habits, we highly recommend the following reading:

Discover new applications

The world of drones is vast and diverse. Try out different applications, be it photography, video production, cartography or even 3D modelling. If you realise that one direction is less exciting, there are plenty of other areas you can explore. Don’t give up straight away if you don’t enjoy something or you can’t celebrate success in it. On our website, we regularly report on exciting areas of work that you can use as inspiration.

Learn and educate yourself further

The technology and possibilities surrounding drones are constantly evolving. Stay on the ball and expand your knowledge with tutorials or courses. The more you learn, the more enthusiastic you will become about what you can achieve with your drone. There are numerous contact points for this.

💡 Tip: For example, we maintain a list of selected drone courses that you can use as a starting point (currently being revised, as of August 2024).

Exchange ideas with other drone pilots

There is a large community of drone pilots who regularly exchange information. Join various groups, follow forums or meet up with other pilots in your area. The exchange of ideas and experiences can give you new inspiration and bring back the fun. It is also a good idea to carry out flights together with other drone pilots and benefit from each other’s tips. Nothing is more valuable than exchanging ideas with experienced drone pilots.

💡Tip: We run a forum for drone pilots where you are welcome to take part in discussions or ask for help at any time.

Take part in competitions or projects

Competitions or joint projects are a great way to test your skills and compete with others. This can give you a real motivation boost and show you what you can already do. Important: Don’t be frustrated if you don’t finish on the podium straight away. Learn from the competition, recognise your limits and look for suitable ways to go beyond them in order to improve.

Current or regular competitions:

Remember why you started

Why did you originally buy a drone? Was it the fascination with the technology, the fun of flying or the opportunity to take breathtaking pictures? Sometimes it helps to remember your original enthusiasm and rekindle it. This also gives you the direction in which you can go in order to discover new possibilities based on your original enthusiasm and maintain your motivation.

Take breaks when necessary

It’s perfectly okay to take a break from time to time. Sometimes you just need a short break so that you can continue with fresh energy and new ideas.

💡 Tip: If you come up with exciting ideas about drone flying during this time: write them down straight away! You will never realise many of the ideas and will probably throw most of them away. But then there will always be that one idea that will motivate you again and help you celebrate success.

Summary

With these tips, your drone will hopefully no longer stay in the cupboard, but will be allowed to take a flight or two with you. Remember: It’s not about always taking the most spectacular shots, but about keeping the fun in flying and exploring and not losing motivation. This can be achieved by setting small but clear goals, taking on new challenges, completing courses and tutorials or even socialising with like-minded people. Keep at it and find your own path as a drone pilot.
