DJI has recently confirmed a problem with the automatic discharge of the DJI Mini 2 batteries. This does not work correctly under certain conditions. DJI Mini 2 owners currently need to be aware of this.
Anyone who has owned a DJI drone for some time will already know that the batteries have automatic discharge technology. This ensures that the LiPo batteries drop to a lower charge level after a certain period of non-use. The reason for this is that LiPo batteries should not be stored fully charged over a longer period of time, as this damages the batteries and their service life. However, this is exactly where the DJI Mini 2 (test) is currently experiencing problems.
Update: The error has now been fixed with a firmware update.
Mini 2 batteries do not discharge automatically
If a battery is in the DJI Mini 2 or in the charging station, it is possible that the automatic battery discharge is not activated and the battery does not automatically reduce the charge level as desired. If the batteries are stored separately outside the drone and the charging station, this problem does not occur.
DJI has already confirmed this error and is working on a corresponding firmware update. Specifically, DJI states here:
DJI is working on a firmware update for the Mini 2 and its battery system to initiate auto-discharge when batteries are in the drone or charging hub and have not been used recently. When placed in the drone or charging hub, the batteries use a minute amount of charge to maintain vital functions and does not initiate auto-discharge. DJI recommends that batteries are removed from the drone and/or charging hub when batteries need to be stored for a long time.

We will report on this update as soon as it is available. DJI Mini 2 owners should keep an eye out for firmware updates and store the drone’s batteries separately until then. This increases the service life and prevents defects in the batteries.
Incidentally, we were able to reproduce the problem with a battery that has been in our DJI Mini 2 for a while. We have now also removed the battery from the drone and are storing it outside.
If you notice any abnormalities on your batteries, dispose of them properly immediately. Abnormalities could be discolouration or bloated areas, for example. Under no circumstances should a battery be used under these circumstances.
